About the Cockapoo Breed

Find out what makes the Cockapoo breed so special to us.

The Cockapoo a crossbreed, bred from a Cocker Spaniel (either American or English type) and a Poodle, most commonly the Miniature Poodle. Cockapoos were bred for their sweet, loving and friendly nature. Cockapoos seem to never lose their puppy-dog charm. Not only do their sweet, happy-go-lucky temperaments and inherent intelligence, make them good therapy dogs and family dogs, but their low shed coat makes them a good choice for those that need or want a more hypoallergenic dog. The Cockapoo is a lovable breed with a fun-loving personality and plenty of energy that makes them a great dog for kids.

Size:

The Cockapoo is a small to medium sized breed. They typically weigh under 30lbs.

Coat:

The Cockapoos can have a single or double coat which can be straight, wavy or curly. All Cockapoos need daily brushing and regular grooming to keep their coat in good condition. The Cockapoos have a diverse range of coat colors adapting both those of their parent breeds. The colors can range from Black, brown (chocolate), cream, apricot and red. Alongside the vast array of colors there are four main coat patterns which are:

  • Solid- One color

  • Parti- One predominant color (typically white) broken up by patches of one or more colors.

  • Phantom- One solid color broken up by a secondary color of a specific pattern. This includes the muzzle side, chin and chest.

  • Merle/roan- A genetic pattern which creates an unique mottled color appearance.

Like with other breeds puppies can change their coloring quite dramatically as they age and their adult coat may be much different than their puppy coat. Other factors of coat change may be due to the weather, sometimes a coat may lighten in the warm summer heat and then become darker again in the cool winter weather. A Cockapoo's coat is soft to the touch and is generally more hypoallergenic due to the Poodle cross. By the time a puppy is six weeks old we can usually tell how the coat is likely to develop but we won't know for sure until their adult coat comes in around a year old. A Cockapoo's coat can develop and change up until the age of two.

Temperament:

Cockapoos are a perfect blend between both of their parent breeds. Cockapoos are known as affectionate family dogs that love their owner or family. The Cockapoo thrives on attention and wants nothing more than to be involved in whatever their family's everyday activities. They are very social animals and do well with most people and pets.

Exercise & Training:

Cockapoos thrive on being busy and are playful dogs who love being in a family environment. Cockapoos are easy to train, and puppy training will help them grow up to be well-rounded, happy and obedient dogs. It's important to socialize your puppy from a young age too, and to teach them to be left alone for short periods of  time to avoid separation anxiety. Adult Cockapoos need approximately 30 minutes of exercise twice daily to stay healthy and stimulated. It's important to remember that puppies shouldn't be over exercised as their joints and bones are still growing. By sticking to manageable amounts of activity and keeping an eye out for signs of tiredness. Cockapoos can be great agility dogs and love playing fetch with their families.
